I am involved in teaching and research in the area of human-computer interaction. Specifically, I am interested in web usability, web accessibility, user-centered design, assistive technology, and public policy in the area of CHI. I also currently serve as the Chair of Public Policy for ACM SIGCHI, and serve as a voting member on the USACM Council.

I regularly publish in journals and conference proceedings, including the International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, ACM Transactions on Accessible Computing, Government Information Quarterly, Behaviour and Information Technology, and Interacting with Computers. I also regularly teach courses on human-computer interaction, web usability, web accessibility, and Management Information Systems. I have published 5 books. The three most recent books are: Research Methods in Human-Computer Interaction, published by John Wiley and Sons in 2010, Web Usability: A User-Centered Design Approach (published by Addison-Wesley) and Universal Usability: Designing Computer Interfaces for Diverse User Populations , a book that I edited, which is available from John Wiley and Sons. I currently serve on the editorial boards of Interacting with Computers and Universal Access in the Information Society and I am the forum editor for public policy in Interactions Magazine. I serve on the executive board of the Friends of the Maryland Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and I am an affiliate researcher at the newly-named Information Policy and Access Center at the University of Maryland College Park. I am also a member of the ACM Distinguished Speakers Program.

My research has been highlighted in articles in the Baltimore Sun, Louisville Courier-Journal, and the Braille Monitor. I have served on program committees for the SIGCHI, ASSETS, SIGDOC, INTERACT, and HCII conferences. My research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, and I am also available for consulting work.
